There are many ways to make this as the program stated, but it is not flavorless without the addition of meat. That is the error they made. If you allow the ingredients to cook properly it is full of flavor even without the meat and if you start with dry beans it is even more flavorful. The problem I see with many cooks is the idea that soup has no flavor without meat. My Italian mother makes this as a soup and many other meatless soups. All flavorful and delicious. And by the way, without the garlic too. I see more garlic used here in America than I have ever seen in Italy. I am glad you tried this without the meat and found it a success!
